DO NOT DECLARE STATE OF EMERGENCY IN THE NORTH -NGF

The President apparently do not have the support of the Governors of the 36 states of the federation as they have  asked the Federal Government to ignore calls by some people to declare a state of emergency in northern states where there is security crisis.
The governors, under the aegis of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, said those making the calls for emergency rule did not wish the country well.
A statement by the Chairman of the Forum, who is also embattled  Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, said in Abuja on Monday that the Federal Government should not allow itself to be distracted.
The statement read in part, “We call on the Federal Government to ignore the ongoing agitation for a state of emergency in some parts of the country.
“These requests are being made by people who do not wish our country well and who are bent on plunging the country into a deeper crisis.
“The Federal Government should not allow itself to be distracted from our collective goal of curbing the insurgency in some parts of our country once and for all.”
The governors also condemned the violence and killings in Borno, Nasarawa, Benue, Adamawa and some other states.
While commiserating with the people and governments of the affected states, security agencies and the families of the victims the state chief executives urged security agencies to continue to do their jobs as professionally as possible.
They appealed to all aggrieved individuals and groups in Nigeria to appreciate the fact that violence could never be a solution to any problem, adding that it would be dangerous to destroy the only country they could call their own.
The governors said they were happy that the federal and state governments were working hard to get to the root of the killings.
The statement added, “We are impressed by the magnanimity of the Federal Government, which has demonstrated an uncommon love for the country by setting up a Committee to explore the possibilities of granting amnesty to the members of the Boko Haram sect.
“It is also a good step that government has agreed to cooperate fully with the National Human Rights Commission in the investigation of the killings in Baga.
“We also commend our security agencies for the selfless sacrifice they are making in the interest of us all to restore calm to all parts of our country.
“We urge the Federal Government to continue to support affected states in the bid to check violence. The Federal Government should remain focused and continue to provide leadership until every part of Nigeria is rid of violence and insurgency.”
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party has accused the opposition parties of lying that the Federal Government was planning to declare a state of emergency in some states.
The party said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, that there was no such plan by the government.
Metuh accused both the Congress for Progressive Change and the Action Congress of Nigeria of making statements which he said were capable of aggravating the security situation in the country.
“The opposition parties in their usual noise-making, homage to falsehood and lies, and quest to always be in the news for frivolous reasons, purported in their statements that the Presidency planned to declare emergency rule in some northern states when no such decision has been reached,” he said.
